Membership

Meetings are held regularly every month at our clubrooms, in the Heritage Park grounds off State Highway 14 in Maunu.

Meetings begin at 7pm and in the summer months are preceded by a BBQ at 6pm.



Each meeting covers the latest space news, what's visible in the night sky (with the use of planetarium software), a topical talk, maybe a fun quiz, and if the sky is kind to us, some deep sky observing.

A monthly newsletter is circulated to our members to keep them up to date with club happenings. We warmly welcome people of all ages and levels of interest. See our calendar for a list of dates.

About the Northland Astronomical Society

The Northland Astronomical Society Incorporated (NAS) was formed in July 2000 with the purpose of promoting and educating the people of Northland in the many fascinating aspects of astronomy.

Thanks to Pub Charity, the society has been able to obtain three state-of-the-art telescopes to replace the old 14" Newtonian Reflector. Chief among them is a Celestron CGE-14 with a computerised ‘Go To’ feature, which allows for easy use. As well as our superb 11" Celestron NexStar and 6" Saxon Maksutov-Cassegrain, members may also bring along their own telescopes, so there are always plenty to look through!

Whether you're already a keen stargazer or just curious about what's up there, you're invited to check us out at the next open night. Actual observing is weather permitting, and because of this we offer audiovisual displays as alternative entertainment. In addition to our public nights, we are also able to arrange private group sessions.

We welcome school classes or any interested groups (scouts, guides etc). We usually begin these classes with a discussion in the clubrooms, and then deep sky observing in the observatory. It the weather is not obliging, we will postpone until conditions are better.
